Accessible Transportation

Navigating Qatar in a wheelchair is quite convenient. The sidewalks are smooth, and the curbs are designed to be accessible. While large roads may not have dedicated sidewalks, smaller (service) roads leading up to shopping malls or large business complexes usually feature sidewalks. Qatar is generally flat, though you might encounter some gentle inclines in certain areas.

Never try to cross the street unless there is a specially designated pedestrian island with a clearly marked crosswalk. The streets in Qatar were primarily designed for cars, not pedestrians with visual or hearing impairments or wheelchair users. While plans exist to make Qatar more non-motorist friendly, we advise you to refrain from asking for help to cross streets without designated crosswalks and use a taxi (or Uber etc.) instead.

Trains

Metro

The Doha Metro has been designed with modern accessibility standards from the outset. All stations are fully equipped with elevators and ramps to accommodate wheelchair users. There are also tactile paths for those with visual impairments, ensuring safe and easy navigation throughout the stations. We urge you to plan your journey online in advance using the Plan My Journey app.

Tram

The Lusail Tram in Qatar has been planned with contemporary accessibility standards from the very beginning. Every station is equipped with ramps to ensure ease of use for wheelchair users. Additionally, tactile pathways are provided for visually impaired passengers, guaranteeing safe and straightforward navigation throughout the tram stations.

Taxis & Buses

Mowasalat (Karwa)

Launched in 2002, Mowasalat operates an taxi fleet of over 3.000 cars, mostly Toyota Camry (for foldable manual wheelchairs) but also larger vehicles such as Ford vans which offer enough space to transport electric wheelchairs. We advise you to communicate your requirements prior to the journey via Whatsapp and to download the Karwa app for Android or iOS for the best experience.

Sit in the rear of the car and use landmarks instead of streets to describe your destination or show the destination on your phone. The drivers will do their best to help you, even those who are new to Qatar but be sure to tell them what kind of assistance you require and if they should exercise caution because of pain etc. Expect questions about your impairment, which is a sign of genuine interest.

Metrolink

The Metrolink Bus service is free of charge for Doha Metro passengers. It is designed to connect passengers from metro stations to various nearby destinations, enhancing the accessibility and convenience
with its low-floor buses for wheelchair users. Metrolink buses are scheduled to align with the Doha Metro’s timetable, ensuring seamless transfers between the metro and bus services.

We advise you to plan your journey online in advance using the Plan My Journey app and to ask staff at metro stations for the best route.
